Week_5

WEEK 5_TASK
Write a short essay of about 400 words about the below stated issue: news and you, again.
Who owns the newspapers and TV stations in your country? Do you think this has an effect on the news that you hear?

The media of Malaysia include television, newspaper radio and others. Many media outlets are either owned the government of Malaysia for example Bernama- newspaper or owned by components parties of Barisan Nasional for example the Media Prima group. Stated owned RTM operates two free-to-air terrestrial local television channels licensed to broadcast in Malaysia, as well as 32 radio channels nationwide. Meanwhile, Media Prima is the parent company of 8tv, tv3, tv7, tv9 channels and Fly FM, One FM, Hot FM radio channels.
Every day, new issue, television shows and even radio broadcast are taken away from people viewing and we can clearly understand that the purpose of news broadcast is to inform people about the things that happened all the time. Since the conventional media is so tightly controlled by the government,  most of the news of political bias or any issue that might be intimidate the power of government  will be censor and not to publish. Thus, some of the news that publish in the newspaper or broadcast from the tv might not believable. This is because they are trying to hide the truth for certain issues so that we can’t actually know what is going on for the particular case. For instances, the censoring of news came to public notice during the Bersih3.0 rally to protest about the unfair election laws. Most of the police beating scene had been edited or remove before publish. Yet, some newspapers try to miniaturize the news to avoid oppose with the government which might bring the trouble to themselves
As a Malaysian, we have the right to get know about “original” news that happened in our country. The government should not control the freedom of the citizen to thinking well as voice out their opinion. Despite the news had been controlled, but our citizen have others avenue to find out the original news which is –internet. Due to the censor issue about the Bersig3.0, people starting trusted the news publishes on internet rather than newspaper or tv news because the news do not control by anyone. For young generation, they even do not read any newspaper or watch tv news but they still can get the information of news through Facebook, twitter, Youtube and etc. As a conclude, who owns the newspaper and tv station will not be change the mind of people thinking. In addition, the news nowadays is transparency on Internet and citizen are smart making judgement or decision.

WEEK 4_TASK
Write a short essay of about 400 words about the below stated issue: news and you.
How often do you read the paper or watch the news on TV? How important is it for you to keep up with current events?

http://www.theihs.org/ihs-journalism-internship-program/newspaper (20 November 2012)

When we talk about the newspaper and TV news, it is the most traditional media form that people update the news everyday. But since I started my university life, I seldom to read the newspaper or watch the news on TV. It is quite high consumption for a student to buy newspaper every day or buy a television. However, the internet has replace the traditional media- newspaper and made my life easier to get the latest news by clicking on the button. I don’t have to wait for the morning paper or news from tv to find out what’s happening but I can also never finished reading news for the day. In addition, the internet can help us to categories the news into few sections. It will be easier for us to find the news and save our time instead of shuffling the newspaper.  Nowadays, people also can use the cellphone to check the current event so that they can get the first hand information. Different people might know the day to day development in their field. For instances, businessman need follow the news to keep in touch with economic and commercial trends in the country. But me as a student reading newspapers can be broaden my knowledge and keep abreast of the current event as well as recent development in various field.

As a student, I will keep up with current events. It’s can’t like the chefs who don't taste their own cooking.  Many people neglect the news that happened around the wall. From the news, we can know several of things that happened in our country as well as others countries. In other word, it is very important for us because the news can reflects a policy or government decision towards the resident. Of course sometimes the current events will be the issue that I am not interested but maybe it will be affect the people around you. For example, recently the AES was implemented to catch the motorist who speed and run red lights. If you are not driving so the news will be not related to you but you can actually remind your family members or friends who are driving about the new policy. So that, they can be more careful in order to avoid breaking traffic rules. Hence, they will not be catches up by the AES camera or pay the summons RM300.The current issue is also very important for our daily conversation. If something big thing has happened, it will spread rapidly among the conversation with someone especially friend and colleague. If you are not aware about what is going on, you might feel isolated among the group. As time pass by, you will apart from the group because you don’t have same topic to discuss or any interest conversation to share with them. At the same time you also will lose respect from the other people who value the current events more.

Week_3

WEEK 3_TASK
Write a short essay of about 400 words on the ‘subject-matter’ below stated.
What is theatre? How do you think theatre, as a media form, communicates messages to its audience?

For me, theatre is someone’s imagination, dramatized on a stage setting. It has characters and actors just like movie and TV shows. In general, theatre is a branch of the performing arts defined as simply as what “occurs when one or more human beings, isolated in time and present themselves to others.  As a performing art, theatre focuses almost exclusively on live performers creating a self-contained drama. Besides, a performance qualifies as dramatic by creating a representational illusion. The impulse towards theatre is universal and ancient, as well as all cultures at all times have a strong tradition of storytelling. Theatre has come to take on many forms, utilizing speech, gesture, music, dance, writing, and spectacle, combining the other performing arts.
Theater can bring a group of people together, even a whole community. Sometimes, it can also ease tension between loved ones and friends, and also change a person mind set. It allows people to get emotional without having a real solid background. For example, in a musical, an orchestra may play a pastiche of melodies from the shoe to set the mood and catch audience’s emotion. Therefore, theatre allows us to communicate messages through experience the world of another person and at the same time experience ourselves in our own world. Theatre requires a physical space in which the performers and audience will collaborate to create experience. They come to experience and understand, emotionally and intellectually that our lives connect to another's life, and our world connects to another's world. The theatre ties together our own humanity and always focuses on human beings and their expression. For instances, audience might cried at productions because the story was very touching, they laughed as well because the funny scene. Moreover, the mix of songs, drama, and music make the massage such as social issue, moral value, and lesson leave a deep impression to the audiences.
In short, theatre is expression. Artists create an experience about our relationship with our world. That exploration leads to a literal experience for audience members as well as artists. By sharing in the experience, audience members also become expressive. Hence, we are driven to explore, understand, feel or express ourselves in our world. Unlike all the other arts, the theatre creates a world. As human beings, we need to actualize ourselves by creating. The theatre, as a media form, is the height of creation for we literally create a complete and living world which focuses on ourselves as human beings.

WEEK 2_TASK 2

Write an essay of about 400 words: Identify at least four social/cultural groups and what media you think they use. You can include photographs if you like.

First of all social groups can be explain by two or more people get together to share similar characteristics, spend time in activity, share personal experiences and stories in the hopes of influencing others. In other words, they collectively have a sense of unity. Social groups work toward the same common goal and have their own rules and definitions within the idea of social grouping. Social group come in with several of size and varieties. For example, they made up because of common interests, beliefs or identity.
Based on my understanding, the primary social group refers a group of people who share the intimate emotional bond and spend their time together frequently. There three basic primary group which are family, child’s play group &neighborhoods or adults among adults. The relationships formed in primary groups are often long-lasting and goals themselves. They also always comforting to the individuals as well as giving fully support. Normally they use the television, newspaper, magazines and mobile to communicate among themselves
Secondary Social group refers a group of people who share a formal association which include work, school or support groups. Secondary group is direct in its contacts and relies more for unity upon the stability of its social organization. It can be lasting either for few years or end up after a short time. For example, employment, vendor to client relationships and others. The relationships formed in secondary groups are contractual in the sense they are oriented towards certain interest. The characteristic of secondary group includes largeness of size, membership, no physical basis, nature of group control, limited influence on personality. Contracts and communication in secondary groups are mostly indirect. Thus, media of communication such as newspaper, telegraphy, and magazines are used by the members to have communication.
Peer group refers a group people who share similarities such as age, background, social status with whom a person is associated and who are likely to influence the person’s beliefs and behavior.  Peer group begin in earliest years when people still young. As children grow as teenagers, this process continues. They begin to develop identity separate from their parents and learn to be independence. In addition, peer groups provide their own chances for socialization since kids usually engage in different type of activities with their peers than they do with their family members. Hence, the peer group will use film, internet, outdoor media, mobile and video games as media to communicate with others.
Reference group refers any group that individuals use as a standard for evaluating themselves and their own behavior. Reference groups are used in order to evaluate and determine the nature of a given individual or other group's characteristics and sociological attributes. It becomes the basis of reference in making comparisons or contrasts and in evaluating one's appearance and performance. Some of the examples of reference groups are individual’s church, workplace, family gathering and others. Reference groups usually convey competing messages. For instance, in movies, young adults often have lively social lives despite not holding any jobs. At all ages, reference group can be used to guide our behavior and show us social norms. In others word, common media that used by reference group members include film, television, radio, internet, blogging and so on.

Week_1

WEEK 1_TASK
Search for meanings of below listed terms. Make sure you note your reference & dates retrieved from the sources.

Cross-disciplinary can be defined as knowledge that explains aspects of one discipline in terms of another. For examples of cross-disciplinary approaches are studies of the physics of music or the politics of literature.

Interdisciplinary refer to new knowledge extensions that exist between or beyond existing academic disciplines or professions. In short, it can be defined as interaction among two or more academic disciplines into one activity. The new knowledge may be claimed by members of none, one, both, or an emerging new academic discipline or profession.

Trans disciplinary can be thought of as the union of all interdisciplinary efforts. While interdisciplinary teams may be creating new knowledge that lies between several existing disciplines, a trans disciplinary team is more holistic and seeks to relate all disciplines into a coherent whole.

Qualitative research
is a method of inquiry employed in many different academic disciplines, traditionally in the social sciences, but also in market research and further contexts. Qualitative researchers aim to gather an in-depth understanding of human and the reasons that govern such behaviour  Quantitative methods can then be used to seek empirical support for such research hypotheses

Ethnographic research is the study of cultures through close observation, reading, and interpretation. As a research method, ethnography is used in many disciplines, among anthropology, political and social studies, education, and others. Ethnographic research allows you to get “up close and personal” with cultures. It places researchers at the heart of the investigations, often allowing them to participate in the very culture they study. Such an active role gives writers valuable insights into their subject, which usually cannot be achieved simply by studying books, journal articles, and websites.

WEEK 1_TASK 2
Write an essay of about 400 words ; describing your thoughts on media use. You can include photographs if you like.

resource: http://www.simplyzesty.com/technology/news/social-media-save-newspapers/

Can you imagine this world without televisions, radios or Internet connections? All these media facilities provide people awareness of what is going on around them. As you know, electronic as well as print media is an effective way of communication as it provides with information ranging from local and state-wide stories, to coverage of events and also information worldwide. In these days even the remotest of villages can get at least one daily newspaper to update the latest news and happenings of the world. Moreover, written media is the cheapest medium of collecting all important information of the district, city, country and the world. With no doubt, the ability of the media to reach a wide audience with a strong and influential message has the potential to have a strong social and cultural impact upon society. Based on Marshall McLuhan , "the medium is the message" which can explain how the distribution of a message is more important than content of the message itself. It is through the persuasiveness of influential media such as television, radio and print media that they have been largely responsible for structuring people's daily lives and routines. Television broadcasting has a large amount of control over the content society watches and the times in which it is viewed. Nowadays most of the companies that want to sell their products by advertising also make use of media. The internet creates a space for more diverse political opinions, social and cultural viewpoints and a heightened level of consumer participation.

Furthermore, I personally think that the most important use of media is to educate the people about the basic human rights. Education and discipline is the key to progress. Hence, media work to educate the people, to help the people and to liberate the people and to empower the people. The media focuses in bringing details of all major situations, decisions and scenarios. People can better understanding their rights and make better decisions. In other way, power of media spread extensive, it can be used to educated people with low cost. For example, there are limited numbers of student that can be handling by a teacher but it can be more than thousand people learning at the same time through the media. For your information, media itself has made people educated and trained with a lot of channels imparting knowledge and information to the public and many of the channels provided the source to confirm it.  Since the media affect our eye, our ears and our mind simultaneously nothing can overcome the influence of the media. We can conclude that media overall is playing very active role for educating, training, guiding and providing information to general public.
